While the exact date is unknown, the cheeseburger was invented in 1926 by Lionel Sternberger in Pasadena, CA at his father’s sandwich shop called the “Rite Spot.”
As extreme food lovers at Unleashed Retreat, we'd like to thank Lionel for his accidental addition of cheese to the infamous hamburger by celebrating National Cheeseburger Day! Join us as we share our dog friendly recipe for a cheeseburger and a list of celebrational savings at your local fast-food spots!
Cheeseburgers taste good when you're alone, but they can taste so much better among family and/or friends. (Plus, nobody's mad when they're eating a big, juicy cheeseburger.) Enjoy a treat with your pup and make their very own cheeseburger to commemorate this wonderful day!
Makes 2. Use half of the listed ingredients for a single serving.
Ingredients:
1.4lb ground beef (ground chicken or turkey can also be used.)
1/2 tsp Oregano
1/2 tsp Parsley
2 thin slices of cheddar or american cheese
A handful of baby spinach
1 large, sweet potato
Optional Ingredients:
2 fresh strawberries, sliced.
¼ cucumber, sliced
Direction:
Using your grill or frying pan; warm your cooking surface with medium-high heat.
Wash and scrub the sweet potato but keep the skin on. Slice into 1" thick slices. This will serve as your top and bottom bun. Put 4 of the largest slices aside.
Mix the ground beef with herbs. Divide the meat into two portions. With your hands, roll into a ball and flatten them into 3/4th" or 1" patties.
Next, cook your sweet potato “bun” slices on the grill (or stove) for 5min on each side. The goal is to get them a bit soft but not mushy. If needed, use half a teaspoon of coconut oil. Once cooked, set aside to cool.
Cook your beef patties, 5 min on each side. In the last minute of cooking, top with a slice of cheese and let it melt slightly.
Cheeseburgers, assemble!: start with one slice of sweet potato “bun” then stack the meat patty (with cheese), and top with baby spinach.
As a completely optional step, add a few slices of strawberry and cucumber (symbolizing the tomatoes and pickles in your human cheeseburger).
Cover with another slice of sweet potato for the top bun and let your pup enjoy! Be sure to share a picture with us on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok @unleashed.retreat #nationalcheeseburgerday #NoDogLeftOut
⚠️IMPORTANT NOTE: Raw meat may contain bacteria that could be harmful to your pet. Please be sure to fully cook the ground beef before serving to your pup. ⚠️
